History — The Underworld
Beneath the overworld lies a second, parallel realm — a full 100×100 world of ash, lava, crystal and void, home to Crystaria's hardest open-world content and the Dark Crystal story arc. The Underworld begins where the overworld's endgame ends: its gentlest region starts at Level 1,000.
Descending
Two requirements gate the descent: complete the Crystal Fracturing story arc (speak to Scholar Aldren to begin it) and reach Level 1,000. Six Rift Portals have torn open across the overworld, shown as violet rifts on the map. Walk onto one and choose Descend; returning works the same way from the matching portal tile below.
| Portal | Overworld Location |
|---|---|
| Ashen Rift Gate | (22, 22) |
| Emberwail Portal | (80, 20) |
| Shattered Crossing | (50, 20) |
| Rift of the Forsaken | (55, 46) |
| Nightfall Threshold | (20, 80) |
| Voidgate of Crystaria | (80, 80) |
Biomes & Difficulty
Underworld enemies are anchored to their zone, exactly like the overworld — levels rise with distance from your entry point — every biome spans the full 1,000–2,000 range, and the deeper regions are meaningfully harder. Descend outward from the entry plains as you grow:
| Biome | Levels | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Ash Land | 1,000 – 1,200 | The smothered entry plains. Start here. |
| Molten Shore | 1,000 – 1,300 | Where lava meets the abyssal tide. |
| Blighted Forest | 1,000 – 1,300 | Dead trees that still move. Do not rest here. |
| Lava Field | 1,100 – 1,400 | Molten flows that burn with every step (see Heat). |
| Crystal Cavern | 1,100 – 1,400 | Glittering caves humming with dark energy. |
| Abyssal Mine | 1,100 – 1,500 | Tunnels that never reach the bottom. |
| Obsidian Mountain | 1,200 – 1,800 | Near-black peaks where ancient things sleep. |
| Void Desert | 1,400 – 1,800 | Silence so complete it erodes the mind. Endgame hunting. |
| Dark Crystal sites | 1,800 – 2,000 | Five story anchors at the corners and centre of the map. |
| Infernal Town | Safe | Refuge, purification and the Dark Crystal forge. |
Corruption
Time spent in the Underworld builds Corruption (0–100, shown as a bar on your stat panel once it rises above zero). Low Corruption weakens your defences; higher thresholds sap strength and agility; at 100 it drains your HP with every step. It decays naturally while you are on the overworld, or visit Sister Embrael in Infernal Town to purify 25 points for gold.
Heat & Heat Resistance
Lava Field tiles deal damage on every step — 5% of your maximum HP, reduced by your Heat Resistance stat. Build Heat Resistance through Dark Crystal gear and certain Underworld drops to cross the molten regions safely.
Dark Crystal Shards & Gear
Underworld enemies drop Dark Crystal Shards — the drop chance grows with the enemy's level. Bring shards to Artificer Veldris in Infernal Town to forge Dark Crystal gear: the game's top equipment tier (item level 80–100, with innate Heat Resistance). It cannot be bought — only forged or claimed from the deepest boss vaults.
Dungeons, Raids & the Story
Six Underworld dungeons (Levels 1,000–2,000) and two raids — the 5-floor Siege of the Infernal Throne and the 7-floor Abyssal Expedition — use the same systems as their overworld counterparts. The Dark Crystal story arc spans both worlds: it opens with Scholar Aldren on the surface, sends you to five Dark Crystal sites spread across the Underworld's corners and centre, and ends at the Heart of Darkness. Each chapter unlocks when the previous is turned in, with level requirements rising from 1,000 to 1,800.
Patch 3.5 — The Umbral Deep
A new Underworld region (levels 2,400–3,000, rising toward its dark heart) carved from the Lava Sea: void-desert, dark-crystal veins and the Lightless Delve mine. Its dungeon, The Lightless Chapel, is led by the Chaplain of the Lightless (weak to Light — of course). Every creature of the Deep drops Umbral Residue, the material behind Tier-4 rune catalysts and the new Pinnacle Masterworks.
