Enemy Variants & Rare Monsters

Variant Enemies

When you click Fight, there is a 15% chance the enemy manifests as a Variant — a stronger or altered version of itself with modified stats. The roll happens once, the first time anyone engages that particular spawn, and the result is shared: a Variant another player has already revealed is a Variant for you too. Variants are marked with a coloured badge in combat — the name carries the label (Goblin Barbarian) and the combat log opens with a ◆ line naming the trait. They do not appear on the map; nothing gives one away before the fight.

One Variant in 10 is a Mimic: it carries one of the eight traits above but wears the Mimic label instead. The ◆ line in the combat log still names the trait it copied, so read it before you commit.

Hunting Variants

Variants are how the boards test you. Roughly one hunt in two (50%) on every Quest Board names a specific Variant — Wolf Barbarian, Goblin Mimic — and is marked with a ◆ Variant pill. A Variant hunt asks for a single kill and pays like a full multi-kill hunt plus 30%, on EXP and gold alike. A Variant kill also counts toward any plain hunt of the same monster, so a lucky roll never goes to waste.

75% of the Kingdom bounties posted to the Wanted Board name a Variant as well; each bounty stays open for 60 minutes and is called in chat the moment it is posted.

To find a named Variant, hunt the base monster. Every fresh spawn you engage is another roll, and which label comes up is luck — so fight many Wolves rather than waiting on one. See Quests for how board hunts are tracked.

Rare Monsters

Rare Monsters are unique named creatures that appear on certain tiles with a distinctive orange border. They are significantly more powerful than normal enemies of their level but drop rare items and large amounts of EXP and Gold. Rare Monsters are visible on the map to all players.

When a rare spawns, the whole server is alerted: a colour-coded chat broadcast announces the rare's name, title, area, and lore. The text is rendered in that rare's signature colour. Each rare instance is announced exactly once; if you missed the broadcast, scroll back in chat. After a rare is defeated it enters a 1–5 hour respawn cooldown, then a fresh instance spawns somewhere on its preferred terrain.

Rare monsters are gated by terrain. Each rare lists one or more wilderness types it appears in — a Crystal Drake will never spawn in a marsh, an Ember Tyrant never in a snowfield. The continental wilderness ("Land" tiles) has its own dedicated roster:

RareTitleLevelTerrain
Sir Maldros the ForsakenFallen Knight of Kironi~32Land
Hornhide The Plains Tyrant ~38Land
The Hollow King Crownless Wraith ~46Land
Vexthar the Undying Ancient Lich Lord ~40Wasteland, Marshland
Crystalwing The Crystal Drake ~45Mountain, Snow
The Swamp Titan Colossus of the Mire ~35Marshland, Forest
Ashrender The Ember Tyrant ~42Desert, Wasteland
Thornwood Ancient The Living Grove ~38Forest, River, Land
Frostfang The Glacial Predator ~43Snow, Mountain

Each rare drops a paired weapon + armour set with unique names, plus elevated EXP and Gold rewards.

Rare Monsters respawn periodically. If you see one announced on chat that you cannot defeat yet, log the location — another player will probably finish it, but the next instance will spawn within a few hours.

Nemesis Mobs

Nemesis Mobs turn an ordinary monster into a personal antagonist. When a normal foe lands the killing blow on you, it doesn't just despawn — it earns a name, a grudge, and a few levels, and becomes your Nemesis.

The grudge

  • Your rival waits on the very tile where it felled you, risen as a beefed-up, named variant ("Goblin the Unkilled").
  • Return to that tile and you'll find a crimson Avenge! encounter. Put it down for a revenge reward — gold and bonus EXP scaled to how many times it's bested you.
  • Fall to it again and it grows stronger, gains levels, and tallies your defeats. The longer it lives, the deadlier — and the sweeter the payback.

Tracking your rivals

Open Adventure → Rivals to see every Nemesis hunting you: its name, level, trait, how many times it's killed you, and exactly where it lurks so you can go settle the score. Up to three can hunt you at once.

A Nemesis is never a wall — it sits on a single tile you can avoid or out-level. It's a story you choose to chase, not a gate.

Old Evils — the dungeon rares

Dungeons have rares of their own. Roughly one instance in 40 replaces an ordinary spawn with one of six named Old Evils — Gravekeeper Ilmoth, The Hollow Choir, Vessel of the First Dark, The Sunken Magistrate, Maw of the Deep Vault and The Unmade King, by depth — and the Old Evil dungeon modifier guarantees one. They carry about 2.5× the stats of their floor-mates, pay 4× the EXP and gold, burn gold ☠ on the dungeon map, and always drop Mastercraft precursors with a 12% chance of a Schematic. Your kills are tallied in the Hunt log on the Mastercraft tab. See Dungeons.

World rares have elements

Every world Rare Monster now carries an element — a weakness, a resistance, and Elemental Shards when it dies. The three Sundered Reaches rares hold the scarce ones: the Aurora Sovereign is Light, the Glass Prophet Lightning, Skyfather Ranulf Wind. World rares also drop Mastercraft schematics 8% of the time.
